Our Numeracy Page
Check out what we are learning in Math!

We started off this year by identifying our "Positive Math Mindset."
Here is our list:
Never give up, and keep trying
If you're stuck go back and try it later
Ask a friend, they can help!
Learn from our mistakes -its ok to make mistakes
Brainstorm as many ideas as possible then eliminate
Think about what you can do next, by pushing yourself to get through it.
Be confident, and keep trying
Be open to different strategies and opinions - be open minded.
Always think you can do it. Tell yourself you can do it.
Take a deep breath, and try again.
Try doodling to help you explore ideas
Never say “I can’t do it” instead say “I can’t do it yet.” or “Next time, I will be able to do it.”
Don’t think its the hardest problem in the world because, it probably isn’t

Use what you already know.

Unit 1 - Number Sense

We are learning that numbers like 324 tell us “How Many” or “How Much.”

Patterns are very important in number systems. In our place value system each place value is 10 times the value of the place to the right.
A number has many different “forms.” For example 12 145 is 1 ten thousand, 2 thousands, 1 hundred, 4 tens, and 5 ones, but it is also 121 hundreds and 45 ones. A place value system requires a symbol for a place holder. For example, the 0’s in 3004 are place holders. They push the digit 3 over to show it represents thousands and not tens.

Numbers can be writing in different ways to represent something different about that number. Numbers can be represented as Words and Expanded Form.
Here is an example of expanded form: 12 345 = 10 000 + 2 000 + 300 + 40 + 5 or expanded form can be written as 12 345 = 1 x 10 000 + 2 x 1 000 + 3 x 100 + 4 x 10 + 5 x 1

We are learning that numbers can be deconstructed and re constructed to make it easier to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
